Once a year, during the month of February, the city of Jaisalmer comes to life with the celebrations of the Desert Festival. The gorgeous Sam Dunes found in the Thar Desert at a distance of almost 42km from Jaisalmer, play host to this exciting event.
During the course of three days, the monotony of the desert is broken by enthusiastic celebrations. From camel riding to parachuting, there are various events that keep the participants thoroughly entertained. The festival is kicked off with a procession in the morning, which is held from Jaisalmer Fort to Shahid Poonam Singh Stadium. The locals, dressed in traditional costumes, win the hearts of the spectators with their lively singing and dancing which showcases the lifestyle of the desert, along with its various aspects.
Various kinds of events are also held during the course of the festival, some of which are quite unique, like the Camel Polo. The other events which are keep the spectators thoroughly captivated are turban tying, tug-of-war, longest moustache competition and Mr. Desert competition. The finale of the festival is marked by an amazing air show by the Indian Air Force, a cricket match and Rajasthani folk concert, besides others.
